Cross Cutting Saw Blades

Saw blades for cross cutting solid wood will have from 40 to 80 teeth per blade. These saw blades will have an alternating top bevel (ATB) ground into the tops of the teeth. What this means is the top of the teeth will be beveled left and then right alternating around the saw blade. The face of the tooth will have either a positive or negative hook angle depending on the type of power tool you will be using the saw blade on. Generally speaking positive hook angle saw blades are more likely to be used for cross cutting on a table saw and negative hook angle saw blades are commonly used on mitre or chop saws. Negative hook angle saw blades will require more force and will feed slower but they will have minimal splintering if they are kept sharp through regular sharpening maintenance. The more teeth on the sawblade the slower the feed rate will be and the smoother the finish on the cut surface will be. Fewer teeth will feed faster but the finish will generally not be as smooth. Any saw blade that has become dull through use will not perform as well as a new or correctly sharpened saw blade. A negative hook 80 tooth sawblade is commonly used to cut plywood if splintering is a problem.
Rip Saw Blades
Saw blades for cutting along the grain or ripping will have from 10 to 24 teeth per saw blade. The tips on these saw blades will be ground straight across the top although occasionally they may have a slight alternate top bevel. These saw blades have a fairly large gullet area to allow for more sawdust to accumulate while in the cut. This allows rip saw blades to feed easily and quickly. Rip saw blades will have a positive hook angle. The finish on the cut surfaces is generally fairly rough and rip saw blades are usually used for rough or initial sizing cuts along the grain.
